What an awesome experience this pool build was from start to finish thanks in large part to the team over at American Pools and Spas! Like many others, I'm sure, this wasn't a spur of the moment decision for us and we had a very clear vision for what we wanted out backyard pool to be and APS completely knocked it out of the park. We were told it was one of the biggest non-commercial pools they've ever built, and it's a whopper! 8 feet deep, 12 feet wide and 39 feet long in the deep end, overall 39 feet wide, and coming in at over 39K gallons. Jonas Anderson was extremely patient with us and accommodating during the design process and remained involved with us well beyond just "selling us" on the pool. He helped us pick the perfect color to create our beautiful teal water and was great when changes needed to be made. This was truly a fluid project and Jonas helped us all roll along! Our main super-intendent, Austin Miller, was amazing! He kept things moving forward and made sure we were happy with every step of the process. As with any construction project, we hit some bumps in the road and some unforeseen delays, but Austin kept us in the know and helped smooth things out along the way. Can't say enough how much we appreciate the work he did and the patience he showed with us. Also want to mention Edna and Dawn, our schedulers, and thank them for keeping the lines of communication open and keeping us informed of upcoming milestones and site visits. Communication is the key to any successful project implementation!! I wanted to thank Melissa Prano....she was the 1st pool sales rep., 2 years before Jonas - yes, we waited, that really understood what we wanted. We are not just building our dream pool for "now", its for family, friends, our furdogs, grandparents, and as we get older...so it doesn't turn into a large tub outback that no one can use. There are so many 'little' additions to our pool to ensure we enjoy our pool well into our 80s+...we still have 40 more years, but looking forward to enjoying our piece of paradise!!! And Jonas quickly caught on to that same vibe, which is a true testament to how American Pools & Spas have a firm grasp on how to treat customers. Can't recommend American Pools and Spas strongly enough. When we hit the lotto, we know exactly who we want building our next pool!

My wife and I contracted American Pools and Spas to install a pool and screen enclosure for our back yard in 2019. Our salesperson/designer was Ray Garvey. Ray was amazing to work with. He took his time to design a pool that he thought would work great for our space. He listened to our feedback on what we wanted our pool to be and how we were going to use it. He was always available via text and was very responsive. Even though we could tell he had been in the business for awhile, he still gave us 5-star treatment and customized our pool. The pre-construction process is the reason for my 4-star review. We had never installed a pool and when we met with our construction manager for the pre-con, we would have preferred to be treated as if we knew nothing. He went through the process very thoroughly, but quite quickly. We didn't know the questions we should have been asking. Namely, we were responsible for re-routing irrigation around the work-site to allow for irrigation of the rest of our yard during construction. We may have been informed of the clearance required for the work area, but we didn't recall what it was or if we had actually received the information. Not knowing the clearance ended up with the re-routed lines being damaged and unusable, resulting in losing some grass to lack of water. It ended up not being a big deal as we had to install some sod around the patio anyway after turnover. The construction process was wonderful and is where American Pools and Spas truly shines. They are professional, communicative, and responsive. You can expect to get multiple email notifications and phone calls as each phase is starting and completing. You will get notifications when materials are being delivered to your home. The pool build process is messy (lots of earth being moved), but American Pools and Spas kept the job site surprisingly clean. They removed debris and tools/machinery at the end of each day and kept the job site overall in tidy condition. Overall, we are 100% happy with our pool and back yard patio space. We would work with American Pools and Spas again if we install another pool at some point in the future.

I have nothing but good things to say about American Pools & Spa. The design is great and Matt was a pleasure to work with. Communication has been excellent. Our project supervisor, Josh, walked us through the scope of the project and our first coordinator, Dawn, has been so helpful and detailed about each step in the process. So far, the steps have occurred faster than suggested and all has been done in a very professional way. Honestly, my husband and I couldn't be more pleased with the work and communication so far. Updating review now that Phase 2 is complete. The care taken on the patio work was incredible. The team was so exact with making sure the sand was level under each tile and tiles lined up perfectly. Not an easy feat with the rounded edges. Our coordinator, Troy was quick with scheduling and this phase flew by. We're currently in the Phase 3...re grading, screen enclosure, alarm and pool interior. It will be the final stage. I'll continue my review when it's finished. Okay phase 3 is now complete minus a few touch ups. We love our pool, pictures enclosed. It is exactly as we had hoped. Extended lanai and screen enclosure have changed everything in the best way possible. Bug free and beautiful!! Panoramic screen was a fantastic choice as we still have a clear pond view. It all went up in one day! Amazing!! Electrical and security were done before interior, including some inspections. There was a lot of scheduling for all moving parts and people. My only complaint was that communication about scheduling was not forthcoming in this stage which caused some frustration as we had to coordinate fixing our irrigation and landscaping on our end without knowing when and who would be working day to day. End results were fantastic though so I still stand by my initial review that this is a professional, skilled company. We’re thrilled with our new pool!

This is a very good company. They did a great job going over every step with us. They communicated very well throughout the whole process. The only negative I would say is that there are some steps where they need the home owners at home for things like safety checks or pool school. We were made aware of this in the beginning of the process before work began; however, when it came time to schedule these dates we were only given a 1-3 days notice. This limited flexibility for when these could be scheduled makes it difficult to coordinate it around our work/life schedule. I had to take off work for pool school because we were told about it maybe 36 hours in advance. It would be nice to be given at least a week’s notice to set up a schedule regarding things that we have to be home for. We just completed pool school with Jaime. He does an amazing job going over everything. He takes his time and asks after every step if we have any questions before we move on. He even told us we can record him so we always can listen back to his instructions. He was very professional and very polite. Highly recommend this company and Jaime. Jessie was our field superintendent. He was amazing and very responsive and professional throughout this whole process. We had a concern during the construction and voiced that to him and he came out that day to go over it with us and resolve it. Matt was who we first talked to when we went to American Pools. He was very diligent taking notes so that we got everything we asked for. There was a mistake and our firepit had been left out of the contract even though it was priced in to the final amount. However, due to Matt taking good notes in our face to face meetings, he was able to see this and resolve it quickly. Overall, we are very satisfied with this company and would recommend them to anyone.

If I could go back in time and pay twice the amount I paid for our pool/spa combo just to avoid having to deal with this particular company again, I would do it without hesitation. Every aspect of interaction with this company has been riddled with drama and disappointment. Problem 1: As new home owners and first time pool owners, we had a lot of questions and concerns during our initial consultation. The salesman assured us that any feature we deny initially can be added later for additional cost. In the hopes of reducing the impact to our mortgage, we opted out of certain features, hoping to add them later. The primary feature we opted away from was the auto fill and drain function. We were not sure how necessary this would be, so we decided to give it a year and evaluate how important it would be after the year was over. After a few months, we realized it would be very beneficial for us, so we decided to give them a call. Not only did they lie to us and tell us that they "only do installations" and will not add any feature or enhancement to a pool once it is completed...but we found out that the particular feature we wanted would require some drastic implementation and rework, costing us thousands and a lot of damage to the pool. Many of the 3rd part contractors we asked told us it wouldn't even be worth the risk and would not agree to perform the enhancement. Problem 2: Installation itself delayed our home's closing and construction by 3 months. They refused to inform our building contractor of any schedule changes or updates. We sat in the dark for months, without any understanding of why our home was completed and our pool was sitting there unfinished for months. Taking a long time to finish the pool, you would expect that it was completed with quality in mind....you would think... Problem 3: Now that the pool is completed, we have identified numerous issues with the pool, the pool deck, and certain functionality. Our builder warranty service has fought this company every single time they needed to come out to our home. They have put forth an incredible amount of effort to avoid repairing any issues we discovered. Our warranty service has been on site to identify and confirm problems and ended up getting into verbal screaming matches right in our home, while talking to American Pools on the phone. They have been an absolute nightmare and the quality of the pool was extremely mediocre. I would not use this company if they were offering pools for free, because the long term effects of maintenance and aggravation are not worth it. Unfortunately there were not a lot of well-advertised options when we were shopping for a pool, but I encourage everyone to do a little a research and steer clear of this company altogether. Not a single person in my entire community that has used American Pools has had a decent experience. They are all part of the "Never again will I use them for anything" crowd. Considering some of their "top reviews" are from employees....and they removed the functionality to place reviews on Facebook....there are plenty of red flags to fully support all of this...

I'm not going to go into considerable detail because I just don't have the energy or time to list everything but my American Pools experience is the "worst" I've ever dealt with in all my years. Now don't get me wrong, my Pool is awesome to this point. I know that the pandemic has had its toll on many things but what I was told about the process was by far from actuality. My Salesman, who'll remain nameless was a big disappointment. For someone that's had longevity with with the company, I was completely surprised with his lack people skills with the customer and forgetfulness (made us feel like we should have known the ins and outs about pools, it was our 1st!) fluffed everything as oh sure, no problem, oh ya.....left a couple important pieces we needed off the design and forgot to have us pick out our granite waterfall until the day it was to be installed (last we heard from him) which delayed construction for weeks. He told us the process would take about 5 months when we signed our contract on 7/29/20. Well, we finally got the last detail done (2 months after final payment yesterday 5/5/21) and most surprisingly to us was the that he never once contacted us during the process to check on things....really? This company uses contractors for everything except the screen enclosure which by far was the best piece of our construction process. Like I said, we're happy with the outcome but you have to constantly check on every step and keep your thumb on them (especially the contractors) as some of the workmanship lacked attention to detail and shotty workmanship (every step is done by someone different and a few had to return to fix what they had done, some multiple times!) American Pools has their construction Superintendent (not sure of the title) that comes out weekly to take pictures of what has been completed, many weeks there was nothing done but he took pictures anyway? The 1st guy Keith was nice enough but he always was blaming the schedulers in the office on why there was no work activity during the week. He gave us the office number to contact them, good luck with that as they rarely answered the phone and if you left a message they'd maybe call you back or they'd email you a reply.....once the girl said I'm more easily reached by email?? I now know why they didn't want to answer the phone because customers were so upset....was told that by Keith. The person that took over for Keith, Jamie his boss, was nice as well and truly I believe tried to help but his hands were tied as he didn't set the schedule. One thing American Pools is full of is "Excuses"! Maybe other pool companies are similar who knows....maybe their moto should be "We suck less" who knows but our construction experience with them was the "Worst" I'd be happy to answer any questions you have......good luck!!

About American Pools & Spas Inc

American Pools offers expert pool builder, renovation, and repair services in Orlando, FL. Transform your pool with quality craftsmanship.

Company Snapshot

American Pools & Spas Inc is headquartered in Satellite Beach, with its permitted project activity concentrated in the greater Orlando area and its own marketing describing service across Orlando specifically. The company holds Florida license CPC1457412, a Certified Pool/Spa Contractor credential confirmed current with the state, under qualifier William Dustin Underwood and on file since 2007 — nearly two decades of licensed history.

Specialties & Service Area

Recent project values run high, with several jobs between $145,000 and $412,000 alongside more modest builds in the $32,000 range, and the bulk of the permits under this license sit in Orange County (11 of the most recent), with smaller footprints in Osceola, Sarasota, and Lake counties. One recent Orange County permit, for a pool at an estimated $329,000, points to the company's willingness to take on large, custom-scale projects alongside standard residential builds.

What Customers Say

Four hundred twenty-six Google reviews average out to 4.3 stars, a large enough sample to carry real weight, alongside a 4.7 average on Facebook. The positive reviews are detailed: named designers and superintendents (Jonas, Austin, Jaime, Rob) get credit for clear step-by-step communication, tidy job sites, and at least one build described as among the largest non-commercial pools the company had constructed at nearly 40,000 gallons. The negative reviews are just as detailed — repeated acid-washing needed to fix surface finish that reviewers say ultimately made things worse, a roof leak left unresolved for months after a failed inspection, uneven paver decking blamed for standing water and mold, and more than one account of full payment being required before completion, leaving no leverage once problems surfaced afterward.

Bottom Line

Two decades of licensed history and one of the larger review samples in this market both suggest a builder with real staying power and the capacity to take on large custom projects. The recurring, specific complaints about finish quality and what happens after final payment are consistent enough across years of reviews that a milestone-based contract and a careful final walkthrough are worth insisting on.
