We have done two pools now with Water Design Pools. Kevin Brown was terrific to work with on both projects. The first was a new build in Bird Key. We demolished the old pool and had a new modern one put in. Fantastic! The second project was in Longboat Key. That project was a redo/update. Completely changed the look and functionality of the pool and backyard. Both projects were done on schedule and at the agreed upon price...no surprises! Anytime I have had questions or can’t figure something out, Kevin has responded promptly and professionally. Would use again!

We had a beautiful pool and spa built by water designs. We met with Joe, who helped us to design and explain the best design, features and equipment that would work for our size pool. He was thorough, followed through on things when stated. When we had a hiccup by hitting part of our drain field, he was helpful in who to call in order to get it squared away, working with us to reschedule after we had the proper people come out for the plumbing issues. This company was top notch and I highly recommend them for any pool project.

Water Designs just completed our pool project and we could not be happier!! The project was completed on time and budget and the worksite was always presentable. The crew were polite and always on time. Whenever we had a question Joe or Kevin would call back promptly. Kevin recently came by on a Saturday (his day off) to help me with a heater setting. This company goes above and beyond to satisfy it's customers and I'd recommend Water Designs to anyone considering building a pool. Well Done!

So, it has been over six months now that our pool was completed and my wife and I absolutely LOVE it, I can not say enough good about Water Designs. Most of our contact was with Kevin and he was very responsive, would get back to us quickly with any questions we had. He has the patience of a saint and will keep explaining things until you understand them. We were first time pool owners and are so glad we picked them.

We ordered a swimming pool and separate koi pond from this company in 2015. Since then the koi pond has been leaking and they cannot seem to figure out a way to stop the leak. Additionally a light bulb burned out and it has taken them months to replace it (still have not). As for the pool, the main problem is the water line tile has been dropping off. They informed us they would charge us nearly $9,000 for them to come in and replace it. The tile started to fall off in less than one year. Also, it took them months to get the wireless controls to work. Today was the last straw when I found muriatic acid leaking out of one of the lines they put in. I would NEVER recommend this company.

Consider alternatives before choosing Water Designs of Sarasota! The owner comes across as a good guy however, the product he delivered to me was so substandard that I have had to spent considerable sums fixing issues such as: foundation sinking, tile separation, replacing improperly sized filtration system, replacing hot tub pump and fixing fire bowl that was hooked up backwards.

Company Snapshot

Water Designs of Sarasota, Inc. operates out of a Sarasota office on Interstate Court, holding an active Florida Certified Pool/Spa Contractor license (CPC057253) under qualifier Joseph J. Dudash, on file with the state since 2001 and confirmed current with the DBPR.

Specialties & Service Area

Public permit data ties most of the company’s work to Sarasota County, with a secondary footprint in neighboring Manatee County. Customer feedback centers on the design process — clients specifically credit the team with walking them through layout, features, and equipment choices before a shovel goes into the ground, and one reviewer highlighted that the company’s point of contact stepped in to help coordinate around an unexpected drain-field conflict discovered mid-project.

Licensing & Track Record

County permit records show a documented set of permits filed under this license, with 4 currently open. Recent permit values suggest the company has been trending toward larger jobs: a 2023 sample averaged around $23,500 per project, 2024 rose to roughly $126,700, and 2025 activity is averaging near $190,000, with individual projects in the sample ranging as high as $240,000.

What Customers Say

Reviews are thin (13 total) and genuinely split, which is worth sitting with rather than smoothing over. On the positive side, multiple clients single out Kevin Brown and Joe Dudash by name for being responsive, holding to quoted prices, and returning calls promptly — one described project managers coming by on a Saturday, their day off, to help troubleshoot a heater setting after the work was long finished. But the negative reviews are specific and harder to wave off: one customer reported a koi pond leak that went unresolved for years alongside a $9,000 quote to fix falling waterline tile that had failed within a year of installation; another cited a sinking pool foundation, tile separation, and an undersized filtration system requiring significant out-of-pocket fixes; a third described a muriatic acid line leak and difficulty getting the company to return calls about open service issues.

Bottom Line

The license and permit history here are solid and verifiable, project values have been climbing, and the design-phase experience gets real, name-checked praise. But the small review sample includes recurring, specific complaints about tile durability and slow follow-through on warranty repairs — worth raising directly before signing, particularly on any project involving water features or specialty tile work.

What areas does Water Designs of Sarasota, Inc serve?

How do I verify a pool builder before hiring?

Check: (1) active FL license on DBPR, (2) real permit history with the county, (3) genuine reviews across platforms, (4) fair pricing. This profile gathers all four from public records.

Does Water Designs of Sarasota focus more on new pool construction or renovations?

Both, based on public reviews. Customers describe full new builds (a modern pool replacing an old one on Bird Key) as well as renovation projects (a full redo/update of an existing pool and backyard on Longboat Key, plus equipment upgrades and resurfacing). "Design" is also the single most-mentioned praise theme in customer feedback.

What do customers say about working with Water Designs of Sarasota?

Positive reviews consistently highlight design work, on-time completion, and responsive follow-up from staff (Kevin and Joe are named repeatedly). That said, a real complaint pattern also shows up in lower-rated reviews: a few customers report post-completion issues such as tile separation and slow response on warranty-type repairs, which is part of why the current review average sits at 3.8 stars from a relatively small sample of 13 reviews.
